Children’s Eyecare
Giving Your Child the Best Start for Healthy Vision
Most children have excellent eyesight, but some may struggle without realising it. Early detection is key — the sooner we pick up any vision problems, the easier they are to treat and the better the long-term outcome for your child.

Free NHS Sight Tests
Eye tests for children under 16 are free on the NHS. Young people aged 16–18 in full-time education are also entitled to free NHS-funded eye examinations.
Signs Your Child May Need an Eye Test
Look out for these common signs that your child may be having difficulty with their vision:
- Complaints of blurred vision or frequent headaches.
- Avoiding reading or struggling with concentration at school.
- Sitting very close to the TV or holding books close to the face.
- Frowning or squinting when trying to focus.
- Eyes turning inwards or outwards (often more noticeable when tired)
Even if no signs are present, we recommend an annual eye test if there is a family history of glasses or squints.

Why Children’s Eye Tests Matter
Clear vision is vital for learning, development, and confidence. Regular eye tests not only check sight but also monitor the health of the eyes, ensuring that conditions such as lazy eye (amblyopia) or squints (strabismus) are detected early.
